This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.
The sex therapy field has historically centered heteronormative and cisnormative perspectives, often treating them as the standard or “default” instead of just two ways (of many) that people relate to themselves, other people, and their sexuality. Queering Up Sex Therapy helps attendees examine the social and cultural norms that may be informing their practice, both implicitly and explicitly, and explore ways they can expand or modify their sex and relational therapy approach.
Attendees will leave with a more expansive toolbox to use with clients of all identities and orientations — not just those who identify as “queer.”
This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 2 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification. This course covers the following AASECT Core Knowledge Areas:
B. Developmental sexuality from a bio-psycho-social perspective across the life course.
D. Topics related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity: issues and themes impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual people; heterosexuality; gender identity and expression.
F. Diversities in sexual expression and lifestyles including, but not limited to relationship structures (e.g., polyamory, swinging, consensual non-monogamy) and sexually diverse communities (e.g., BDSM, kink).
O. Professional communication and personal reflection skills.
This course covers the following AASECT Sex Therapy Training:
A. Theory and methods of sex-related psychotherapy, including several different models.
C. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.
F. Ethical decision-making and best practice.
