This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.
When clients bring conflict, betrayal, abuse, accountability, or relational rupture into the therapy room, it can be difficult to know how to respond without rushing toward certainty. This experiential workshop introduces Transformative Clinical Discernment, a justice-oriented framework developed by Ignacio G. Rivera that helps therapists slow down, assess power, context, agency, and client needs before choosing an intervention.
Through reflection, discussion, and clinical case studies, participants will explore how restorative, transformative, healing, disability, and abolitionist justice frameworks can strengthen therapeutic responses that prioritize dignity, accountability, safety, and healing.
By the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
Distinguish conflict, harm, abuse, and situations requiring further assessment in order to select more appropriate clinical interventions.
Apply Transformative Clinical Discernment to assess power, agency, context, and client needs in situations involving harm.
Integrate justice-oriented frameworks into therapeutic responses that support agency, accountability, safety, and healing without assuming punishment or reconciliation as the primary goal.
This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 2 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification.
