This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.

Men are receiving mental health treatment more than ever before, and as the stigma around therapy continues to decrease, care providers need tools and support for how to navigate the dehumanizing expectations that surround “being a man.” Working with Men, Masculinity, and Masculine Social Scripts is for progressive professionals who want to cut through the noise of patriarchy to make a lasting impact with their male clients.

During this workshop, attendees will explore the social and sexual scripts surrounding masculinity and how they inform the ways men navigate experiences of identity, pleasure, sex, and shame. Using personal reflection exercises, group processing, and group discussion, attendees will practice how to be present with and hold compassion for clients holding harmful attitudes about “manhood.” Attendees also will practice tools for managing their own reactions in real time.

By the end of this workshop, attendees will feel more equipped to work with male clients and challenge the beliefs and expectations that are so commonly attached to being a man.

This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 2 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification. This course covers the following AASECT Core Knowledge Areas:

A. Ethics and ethical behavior.

B. Developmental sexuality from a bio-psycho-social perspective across the life course.

D. Topics related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity: issues and themes impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual people; heterosexuality; gender identity and expression.

O. Professional communication and personal reflection skills.

This course covers the following AASECT Sex Therapy Training:

C. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems. (Need 16 hours couples-specific training)

F. Ethical decision-making and best practice.
