Ethical Dilemmas and Decision-Making is a course for progressive clinicians seeking practical, clear, and direct solutions for navigating challenging sex- and sexuality-related situations in which one-size-fits-all ethical rules may not apply, and might not even help. Whether related to responding to grievances and complaints, making personal disclosures, client charting and documentation, or engaging in civil disobedience, there is no universal road map to guidebook - nor should there be.
Sexuality professionals - especially those working within strict licensure rules - benefit from developing strong decision-making and risk-evaluation skills, as well as building comfort with seeking help and support from trusted colleagues and community members. Not only will this enable them to be even more effective and ethical practitioners, but it also helps them get clear about their personal and professional core values and the kind of sexuality professional they want to be.
This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.
By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
Identify three examples of an ethical dilemma they might encounter in their work
Name three resources from whom they can seek decision-making support or guidance
Identify three core values that they want to have grounded in their work
Discuss ethical “gray areas” related to sex therapy
Identify strategies for evaluating risk when making ethical decisions
This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 3 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification.
