Despite common cultural narratives, our sexual identity never stops developing and there is no age in which it can be considered “complete.” Sexual identity development is often treated as a youth or adolescent experience, which minimizes the importance of learning, unlearning, and exploring one's desires, curiosities, disgusts, and sense of self well into adulthood - especially while in relationship with others. Sexual Identity Development and Attraction is for sexuality professionals seeking a more expansive, less clinical understanding of sexuality as a part of human identity and the various factors that make it develop, evolve, and shift, especially as we age.

This course intentionally de-centers a clinical and medical perspective of sexual identity development to make space for the relational and social, helping attendees build compassion and understanding for identity development processes that differ from their own.

This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.

By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Define “sexuality identity” beyond sexual orientation or gender

  • List four components of human sexuality

  • Discuss the role core values play in sexual identity development

  • Examine the impacts of allonormativity and amatonormativity on sexual identity development

  • Identify three forms of attraction other than sexual or romantic

This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 4 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification.
