When it’s not likely – or may not be possible – to maintain a singular relationship with a client, how should sexuality professionals best proceed? Navigating Dual and Multiple Relationships is a course for progressive clinicians who, should they encounter this situation, want to confidently and effectively navigate holding multiple roles with clients using expansive ethical approaches.

While it is a general rule for sex therapists to avoid having more than one relationship with clients, it is sometimes unavoidable – whether that be due to living or working a small town, sharing similar identity-centered spaces, participating in the same kinds of communal activities, or being active in kinky, ethically non-monogamous, or other typically marginalized sexuality groups. This is especially true for sexuality professionals who hold more than one professional role, and may find that therapy clients actively seek them out for other relational purposes.

This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.

By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify various forms of multiple relationships that sex therapists may encounter

  • Distinguish between ethical and unethical multiple relationships

  • Name at least three contexts in which multiple relationships may be unavoidable

  • Identify their personal ethical lines and hard limits related to multiple relationships

  • List at least three harm- or risk-reduction tools that can be used if/when a member of a dual relationship

This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 2 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification.
